Africa Mental Health Foundation {AMHF} is a Non-Governmental Organization [NGO] licensed to operate both locally and regionally. It was conceptualized in 2000 by Prof. David M. Ndetei, Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Nairobi, Kenya and registered on 18th March 2004.

AMHF has a road-map for Research covering the whole life-spectrum from the health of the fetus in the mothers' wombs through children in and out of school to old age. It focuses on person centered mental health, community, institutional and environmental determinants of mental health and biological aspects of mental health. It also focuses on the spiritual aspects of mental health.

These activities are run under community mental health, substance use and abuse, mental health in institutions and biological psychiatry (genetics of mental disorders).

Vision: Evidence based practice and policy on Mental and Neurological Health, Healthy behavior and substance use.

Mission: To go beyond the ordinary by conducting high quality research realized through a multi-disciplinary team approach that promotes health in all sectors and informs policy through evidence– based information.

Collaborators: AMHF works and has worked with:

  • Several UN agencies.
  • Local and International NGO's.
  • Public and Private Universities
  • Several departments of the government of Kenya.

Support: AMHF supports research students both local and international in providing internship, data collection, entry and analysis, duplication of materials and provision of research facilities and tools. It also encourages students to publish their work.It also gives support to several charitable organizations including the survivors of the August 1998 bomb blast at the American Embassy.
