The lower house in Uruguay has approved a measure (50 in favour – 46 against) aimed at increasing use of marijuana, even if ignorant politicians think the opposite. Uruguay is not the first country where politicians think that facilitating use of marijuana would solve a drug problem. It won´t. On the contrary, organised crime in Uruguay can now look forward to an open, easily accessible drug market where they can continue to sell marijuana by competing with the state-run system. Compete? Yes! How? By offering marijuana at a lower price, better quality, 24/7 service, targeting minors and tourists who want to unwind. No questions asked. Bad luck, Uruguay!

Marijuana use has doubled in the past 10 years in a country with 3.4 million people. Nobody should be surprised if it doubles again in the next 5 years. According to a survey released this week, 63 per cent of people in Uruguay are against the government’s plan – as is the political opposition. To achieve bad times for Uruguay the Senate needs to approve the measure to drug the people.
