The Right of Children to Be Protected from Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances

Side event at CND on March 24, 15:30-17:00, the Press room in the M building

The only explicit statement about narcotic and psychotropic drugs in any core United Nations Human Rights Convention is located in Article 33 of the 1989 Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC). Protection against drugs is, hence, unquestionably a Human Rights issue.

Protecting children from illicit use/production/trafficking of drugs is not an option for States Parties to the CRC. It is an obligation. Since CRC is ratified by the vast majority of UN member states the obligation is universal.

The International Federation of NGOs is – in partnership with IOGT International and the World Federation Against Drugs – hosting a side event at CND on the issue of the rights of the child to be protected from illicit use of drugs as a Human Rights issue.

Speakers will include the following:

• Dato’ Haji Mustapha Ma, Honorary Secretary, IFNGO, host of the seminar

• Stephan Dahlgren, Swedish lawyer specializing in children’s rights

• Roxana Stere, doctoral student in international relations at the SNSPA University in Bucharest, Romania

• Josephine Baxter, Executive Director of Drug Free Australia, Vice President of WFAD, moderator

March 24, 15:30 – 17:00 The Press room in the M building.
