Illinois lawmakers have discussed marijuana in session after session. However, legislation to legalize marijuana for “medical” or “recreational” use never passed because of a combination of political courage, effective law enforcement agencies and insight into the fact that use of marijuana quite often is a stepping-stone to use of other drugs.
Illinois lawmakers are ahead of the curve by not legalizing snake oil “medicine” or, even worse, legalizing it for recreational use. In November, voters in Colorado and Washington State had the folly to do that.
The Illinois Constitution has no provision for voter-initiated referendum so Illinois lawmakers will be able to stay ahead of the curve instead of resorting to drug-induced experiments with citizens in Illinois.
