On May 3 during an address in Mexico City, President Obama confirmed his opposition to drug legalization, saying that “legalizing drugs is not the answer.” In response, Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America (CADCA) Chairman and CEO Gen. Arthur T. Dean made the following statement:
“As the nation’s leading substance abuse prevention organization, CADCA applauds President Obama for standing firm against drug legalization and acknowledging that the best solution to reducing drug abuse and addiction is to use a comprehensive approach focused on education, prevention and treatment. We know that laws discouraging drug use are making an impact. According to the most recent National Survey on Drug Use and Health, an estimated 22.5 million Americans have used an illicit drug. However, since 1979, there has been a roughly 30 percent decline in the overall use of illicit drugs in America. It’s imperative to our nation’s public health and safety that we continue to enforce our nation’s drug laws and invest in comprehensive community-based drug prevention.”
