“Much ado about nothing”, Shakespeare says. Well, much ado about “medical” marijuana for kids, especially as 1) marijuana has not been approved as medicine, and 2) safety issues have not been resolved.

The only evidence to support the use of CBD to date consists of anecdotal reports and rat studies. Neither provides a basis for medical treatment. (Dr. Mary Connolly, director of the epilepsy program at BC Children’s Hospital in Vancouver).

Even if CBD is proven to reduce seizures, rigorous study would be needed to determine the proper dosage, potential interactions with other medications and possible short- and long-term side effects. A scientifically validated CBD treatment is “not something that’s going to be available in the near future”. (Dr. Shelly Weiss, a neurologist at the Hospital for Sick Children).
