In 2010 there were about 24,000 people aged under 19 who were on ADHD medications in NSW, and about 4700 people aged over 19. Nationally the number of people has increased from more than 41,600 people in 2002 to more than 76,600 in 2010. Up to a third of drug users could also be taking other people’s ADHD medications, according to a study that shows strict crackdowns on stimulant medication prescriptions are failing to stop illicit trade in the drugs.
