The Senate Commission of experts in Law, appointed to reformulate the Brazilian Penal Law (Code) has decided today for the decriminalization of drug use in Brazil. Drug Trafficking is still prohibited and may carry a jail term ranging from five to ten years. However, any person caught in possession of drugs with a quantity estimated more or less as “needed” during five days for his/her own personal use, will not be penalized in any way. The proposal made by the Commission will only take effect once the whole Congress votes on it, after June.
