The Sri Lanka Federation of Non-Government Organizations against Drug Abuse (SL FONGOADA) was established as in 1986. Initially it functioned as a sub-committee of the NDDCB and later it evolved into an umbrella organization of Non-Government Organizations working against Drug Abuse and served the nation continuously for more than a quarter of a century as an NGO arm for the prevention of, and treatment of Drug Abuse.


The Federation of Non-Governmental Organizations was established with the objectives of nurturing a strong working relationship between the government and the non-governmental organizations, to assist in the formation and revision of policies and strategies to achieve a drug free Sri Lanka, to represent and coordinate activities between the federation and national, regional and international agencies and organizations, and to raise funds from national, regional and international organizations and agencies as well as individuals for the prevention and treatment substance use. In the formative years of the SL FONGOADA, it had been an exemplary Federation of Non-Government Organization that had been considered as a role-model not only in Sri Lanka but also in the Asian region.


The SL FONGOADA had always maintained a cordial working relationship with National Dangerous Drugs Control Board (NDDCB). The Federation had assisted in the implementation of the national policies to the eradication of drug trafficking, illicit production and abuse of drugs in the country. The SLFONGOADA, had worked in tandem of policy of drug eradication of the Government, the Mathata Thitha, and the Poverty Reduction Strategic Policy, the “Mahinda Chinthanaya”, which is also the manifesto of the Government.


Furthermore, the Federation had maintained cordial relationship with the World Health Organization, the Colombo Plan Secretariat, UNODC and several other organizations working for the prevention and treatment of drug use.
