The Organization of Journalists Against Drug Abuse and Crime in Tanzania (OJADACT), is a registered not-for-profit organization under The Non-Governmental Organization Act.
OJADACT is concerned with increasing incidences of illicit drug trafficking as it remains a big problem and complicated issue in Tanzania. Until recently, heroin use and associated health risks were not perceived as major issues in sub-Saharan Africa. However, in the mid-1980s and early 1990s, East Africa became an important stop along international drug trafficking routes thereby introducing heroin in the region. Consequently, heroin injection emerged in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, in the late 1990s.
The Tanzanian government acknowledges that injection drug use is a well-established problem across many cities in the country. OJADACT is deeply involved in generating and disseminating information related to illicit drug trafficking in the country through news reporting and broadcasting adopting an investigative journalism led approach.
TANZANIA is still being used as a transit route for illicit drugs despite the ongoing international campaign to stop the spread of narcotics. Cannabis herb production and trafficking are reported in practically all African countries, including Tanzania.
