Session 1: Gender- and Trauma-Sensitive Prevention
30 April, 13:00–14:30 CEST

How do gender and trauma shape the realities of substance use and what does that mean for effective prevention? This opening session explores how these factors influence both risk and protection, setting the scene for how prevention responses can be strengthened in practice.

You will gain practical insights into how to design more responsive and effective prevention programmes, including how mental health promotion can be meaningfully integrated. The session also brings attention to particularly vulnerable groups, including children whose parents use drugs, and how prevention and support can respond to their specific needs.

Through real-world examples and shared experiences, you will be invited to reflect on your own context and explore how different approaches can be adapted to your work.

This session is part of our five-part online training series on Building Resilient and Inclusive Responses to Substance Use and Addiction, launching on 30 April. Building on discussions from the World Forum Against Drugs, the series brings together voices from across our global network to explore practical approaches to prevention, treatment, and recovery.

Insights you will gain for Session 1:
• A deeper understanding of how gender and trauma influence prevention
• Practical ways to apply evidence-based prevention principles
• Tools to identify protective and risk factors in your context
• Approaches to integrating mental health into prevention strategies
