Historically, neither the pen nor the sword has been particularly effective when it comes to combating the ‘Ndrangheta, the criminal organization that smothers the southern region of Calabria. But a literary festival in this mob stronghold is helping to breach an ingrained wall of silence, bred of a mixture of fear and resignation.
