The National Drug Master Plan, South Africa´s blueprint on substance abuse, has called for an in-depth probe into whether the decriminalisation or legalisation of cannabis is needed in South Africa. Needed in South Africa? Why on earth should decriminalisation or legalisation of cannabis be needed in South Africa?
According to the Cape Times on Monday Gareth Newham, the head of the Institute for Security Studies’ crime and justice programme, and criminologist Liza Grobler say decriminalising drugs would weaken gangs as their main source of power and income would be ruined. It is ignorance at large if anybody in South Africa would believe that such action would deter gangs from selling drugs. What do you expect? That criminal gangs would start cultivating carrots or emigrate to some corrupt part of the continent? It just won´t happen. Criminal gangs will continue their greedy trade unless massive efforts continue with the ultimate goal to bring them to justice. Legalisation is not an answer to the enormous drug problem, be it in South Africa or elsewhere.
