Family Education Meeting on Trauma – Dhaka Ahsania Mission

We would like to share the press release by Dhaka Ahsania Mission titled “Trauma Can Have Long-Term Effects on Both Physical and Mental Health: Experts Warn

Trauma can leave lasting impacts not only on mental well-being but also on physical health, said renowned psychiatrist Professor Dr. Md. Zahir Uddin at a family awareness session held at Dhaka Ahsania Mission’s Health Sector Office in Shaymoli today.

Speaking to parents and guardians of patients currently undergoing treatment at the Ahsania Mission Female’s Drug Addiction Treatment and Rehabilitation Centre, Professor Zahir Uddin explained that trauma is a psychological wound triggered by frightening, distressing, or painful events. Such experiences may lead to disorders such as anxiety, depression, and emotional instability.

“Trauma affects people differently,” he said. “While some individuals can recover over time, others may suffer from long-term psychological consequences. Children are particularly vulnerable, and it is crucial to assess their mental well-being following any traumatic incident.”

He listed possible causes of trauma, including physical assault, sexual abuse, domestic violence, natural disasters, serious illness, and the loss of a loved one.

The session, which focused on the theme “Understanding Trauma”, was organised to raise awareness among families about the importance of recognising and treating trauma—especially in individuals recovering from substance abuse.

According to Dhaka Ahsania Mission officials, the organisation provides a comprehensive range of services for trauma-affected individuals, including emergency support, hospital-based care, long-term mental health services, counselling, and therapeutic interventions such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). Medication is also provided when necessary under the guidance of specialists.

Also present at the session were Senior Psychologist Rakhi Ganguly, Counsellors Mahamuda Alam, Sumaiya Tithi, and Tahmina Akter, along with various staff members of the Female Drug Treatment and Rehabilitation Centre.

The event highlighted the importance of trauma-informed care in addiction recovery and emphasised the role of family support in the healing process.
