Each year, Project Venda organises the Venda Cup to engage youngsters to play soccer and offer a different ‘kind of high’. Venda Cup is based on the Icelandic Model, developed in Iceland in partnership with the University of Pennsylvania. This Alternative High Model includes healthy, enjoyable social engagement activities that help kids focus on positive goals and channel their energy in productive ways. It gives the experience to play in a professional, competitive manner and in the true spirit of sportsmanship. The project especially encourages girls to join playing in the cup. Girls who would like to play soccer are often discouraged and judged by the community since soccer is considered a ‘boys’ sport.
The project kicked off today and will be taking place for the next 10 days. An interesting article about the Cup, its history and its aim, has been written by the Hindu. Read it here. Or visit Project Venda’s Website to get more background information on the Cup
Also, an inspiring video has been published, showcasing a mother who lets her children play soccer despite their financial difficulties and judgements by society.
