There are a lot of naive Superintendents, Chief Constables or whatever they are called depending on where on the earth they are active (or inactive for that matter). The latest example of naivety, a fate he shares with a few others, is the Chief Constable of Durham Constabulary (UK), Mike Barton, who believes that “if an addict were able to access drugs via the NHS or some similar organisation, then they would not have to go out and buy illegal drugs.“
I don´t know where he and his friends get this stupid idea from. Does anybody for a second believe that legal distribution of presently illegal drugs would prevent criminal enterprises from producing and selling drugs? If so, think again! Criminals don´t care a bit about taxes, responsibilities, opening hours, security or compassion – you name it. They are interested in making money. That is the driving force behind a majority of all drug related crimes. Criminal groups don´t care a bit about Mike Barton´s and friends´ wishful thinking. The drug thugs will carry on with business as usual, providing cheaper drugs than any state-run enterprise would be able to compete with, Criminals keep shops open 24/7, with home delivery if wanted and paid for. They deliver their stuff to anybody – no questions asked. No taxes paid, no offices.
Having worked as a police officer for (nearly) 34 years Barton should know better.
