Over the last 15 years, the European Union has given one of Italy’s most impoverished regions, Calabria, almost $2.5bn to improve its road infrastructure, but critics say some of that funding made its way to the local mafia instead. As a result, all that is left to show for the money is an unfinished highway from Salerno to Reggio Calabria, that has taken more than 50 years to build.
