There is evidence that individuals who use illicit drugs have employment. The early discovery of drug abuse at a workplace makes it possible not only to offer treatment, but also to prevent accidents, absenteeism, ill-health and criminal behaviour.

Screening for drugs with urine tests appears to be an effective method of identifying drug abuse, especially when combined with other measures.

Public and judicial authorities require quality-assured methods for workplace drug testing.

Alternative tests using saliva, hair and sweat should be introduced with great caution, and only after scientific evaluation and approval by public authorities.
