Start With the Truth: Trauma & Addiction
The science of trauma and addiction, explained clearly and humanely
TSAFI, an initiative of Drug Free America Foundation and the World Federation Against Drugs, launches the campaign “Start With the Truth: Trauma & Addiction” (in English and Spanish) today. Why? Because trauma is often misunderstood, downplayed, and not integrated in all systems of SUD care, ranging from prevention, treatment, to recovery.
Trauma isn’t just a story – it is a neurological and biological reality embedded in our brains, bodies, and communities. As substance use rates climb globally, we are pouring immense resources into treatment, yet the numbers stubbornly persist. We know that prevention is ever more important, including the prevention of trauma as it is one of the most powerful predictors of Substance Use Disorders (SUD). Yet, it remains the most under-addressed factor in prevention and treatment.
That is why TSAFI exists. TSAFI is here to make the link between trauma and addiction central to every conversation, every intervention, and every solution. This campaign marks an important milestone in their efforts in being the catalyst for a paradigm shift. They are not just treating symptoms; they are addressing the root cause. Together, we not just hope for a change; but to build a new foundation for long-lasting prevention and recovery.
Join us in our efforts, follow TSAFI, and share the campaign among your networks to ensure the message reaches many! In the coming two weeks, various reels will lead up to a final message, which is shared in both English and Spanish. It will highlight the impact of trauma and its importance to be integrated in our services.
On top of that, the campaign will dive into your questions on addiction and trauma. Share your questions with us via mail or Instagram and we will explore them during the campaign!
