Words matter.
The language we use can shape perceptions and influence how people in recovery are seen and treated.
During Recovery Month, WFAD and RUN are highlighting the importance of respectful, person-first language. This means recognising the person beyond a diagnosis or experience and avoiding language that reinforces stigma or judgement.
Research highlighted by NIDA shows that language can influence perceptions, including in healthcare settings, and that person-first language can help reduce stigma and negative bias.
Choosing our words with care is one practical way to support a more respectful and supportive conversation around recovery.
