“Empowering Outskirt Population: A Model for Community Health and Alcohol Education” – An activity by our individual member Assoc Dr Prof Daud

Our Individual Member Assoc Prof Dr Mohd Nazri Mohd Daud conducted the “Community Health and Alcohol Education” programme for 150-200 residents of Kampung Kokol, Menggatal. The prevention programme included health screening, education, and sports activities to raise awareness. Read their full report below


The Community Health and Alcohol Intervention Screening Program successfully brought vital health services and education to nearly 150-200 residents of Kampung Kokol, Menggatal. This impactful one-day event, held at the heart of the village, was a collaborative effort by the Menggatal Health Clinic, the Department of Family Medicine, Faculty of Medicine and Health Science, UMS, Akademi Kenegaraan Malaysia (AKM), and the Panel Penasihat Klinik Kesihatan Menggatal. The program was officially launched by Dr. Mohd Shamril Bin Mohd Nawi from the Kota Kinabalu Health Office.
According to Assoc Prof Dr Mohd Nazri Mohd daud who lead the alcohol education activities during the events, the program aimed to significantly improve community health and address alcohol-related issues through several key objectives:

  • Providing integrated health education and screening on alcohol use, alongside the introduction of a community alcohol support group.
  • Organising physical and mental health examinations for the local population.
  • Conducting essential health screenings, including the NHSI, PEKA B40, Colorectal Screening, and breast examinations.
  • Offering appropriate health advice and facilitating referrals for clinic appointments when necessary.
  • Reintroducing the Local Alcohol support (aka Community Action Restoring and Empowerment (CARE) group to the community.

A wide array of activities ensured comprehensive engagement and health outreach. These included:

  • General health and alcohol education talks delivered by experts, providing valuable insights and information.
  • A health booth exhibition and an interactive alcohol education booth, offering accessible resources and engaging learning opportunities.
  • General health screening and women’s health screening, providing crucial early detection services.
  • A reappointment Community Alcohol Support (CARE) group, specifically designed to educate and offer early intervention for alcohol use disorder within the community.
  • Sports activities and a drawing competition for primary school children, fostering community spirit and promoting a healthy lifestyle among younger generations.

The overwhelming attendance of nearly 200 local villagers underscored the community’s receptiveness and the program’s vital role in promoting health and well-being in Kampung Kokol, Sabah, Malaysia
