As part of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, we spotlight the work of the Slum Child Foundation in amplifying the voices of girls in Kenya’s informal settlements. This year, their celebration of the International Day of the Girl 2024 in Korogocho focused on the theme “Girls’ Vision for the Future.”
The event, which brought together community members, NGOs, and local officials, was a powerful reminder of the unique challenges faced by girls living in informal settlements. These include the pervasive impacts of gender-based violence, substance abuse, crime, period poverty, and limited access to education and healthcare. Each of these barriers not only threatens their immediate well-being but also limits their ability to envision and achieve a brighter future.
By anchoring discussions in the framework of the Beijing Declaration, the event offered girls a platform to share their lived experiences and propose actionable solutions. Through group activities and dialogue, the participants highlighted urgent needs, such as stronger government policies to address reproductive health rights, expanded educational and health resources, targeted prevention programs for substance abuse, and improved protections against gender-based violence.
The Slum Child Foundation has captured the insights and outcomes of this event in their comprehensive report on the International Day of the Girl 2024. This report not only reflects the voices and aspirations of girls in Korogocho but also provides actionable recommendations for policymakers, NGOs, and international partners. It is a call to action for all who are committed to empowering girls and eliminating the systemic challenges they face.
As we mark the 16 Days of Activism, we urge you to read and share the Slum Child Foundation’s report. Together, we can transform the vision of these girls into a reality by addressing the root causes of inequality and ensuring that no girl is left behind.
