On December 2, we hosted the Commentary Launch – Prioritising Abstinence-Based Prevention, Regulation, and Recovery together with Dalgarno Institute and Narkotika Politiskt Center. We were joined by the two authors, John W. Toumbourou and Shane Varcoe. They shared insights into the Commentary, highlighting the positive outcomes of abstinence-based prevention and recovery and, hence, the need to promote its focus at the regulatory level. They shared research outcomes and best practices in Australia. Furthermore, we were joined by Corinne Shea, who shared developments in the US regarding abstinence-based lifestyles among youth below 21 over the recent decades, as well as their programme “Once Choice”. The discussion showcased that “abstinence-based” should be the main norm in discussions in prevention, treatment, and recovery, to ensure sustainable and healthy environments and lifestyles.
