Today, March 10, 2023, the WFAD  office in the DRC had the privilege and honour to welcome an important delegation, composed of the COAFR and ACP, visiting the DRC and the Swedish Embassy in DRC. The delegation was headed by HE Henric Rasbrant, Ambassador of Sweden in DRC along with Mr Joachim Beijmo, Head of Cooperation, Ms Charlotte Mukadi, National Programme Officer, and Ms Cornelia Gårdmark, Head of Political, Economic, Promotion, and Communication Section of the Swedish Embassy in Kinshasa, carried out a field visit. The field visit showcased the activities of the project Sober Youth-Healthier Communities: Transforming Violent Youth in Kinshasa funded by the Swedish Cooperation in DRC.

The WFAD Country Representative, Mr Dandy Yela and his team had the privilege of leading this delegation to the selected sites to showcase the results of the transformation of these young people – ex-kulunas – and the impacts of the project on the communities. The WFAD office took this opportunity to advocate for continued financial support of this project to ensure sustainability while providing benefits to other vulnerable youth living in the same living conditions.

The Sober Youth-Healthier Communities project is an initiative of WFAD and implemented with local partners DASOD, SYFES, and Inter-Actions ONGD with the objective of transforming young people called ‘kulunas’ through mental and psychosocial counselling sessions and an empowerment programme with formal and informal trainings and IGAs. The visit began at the Makala intervention site where a borehole for the production of clean water has been constructed in the Bagata neighbourhood to provide clean water to more than 20,000 inhabitants of this part of the capital Kinshasa. Afterwards, the delegation visited the Centre Espoir on Kabambare in Lingwala where WFAD and its partners train young girls and women, beneficiaries of the project, in cutting and sewing.

After two and a half years of implementation, 1,036 young girls and boys, beneficiaries of this three-year project, have been psychosocially supported and are currently benefiting from a programme of empowerment and reinsertion through several trainings such as cutting and sewing and pastry making for the young girls; hairdressing, silk-screening, agriculture, and fish farming for the young boys and men. At the end of these trainings, the beneficiaries will receive exit kits to start their own activities for self-support. However, WFAD and partners will continue with aftercare to ensure sustainability and prevent relapse.

All of these young beneficiaries are now weaned from drugs and other psychoactive substances and are excited about the new start they have been offered by the Sober Youth project. WFAD would like to thank the Swedish  Cooperation for the financial support and the DRC authorities for their support of this initiative to fight juvenile delinquency and drug use in Kinshasa.

Jeunesse Sobre en RDC: Visite d’une grande délégation au projet de WFAD financé par la Coopération Suédoise en RDC

Aujourd’hui 10 mars 2023, le bureau de la WFAD en RDC a eu le privilège et l’honneur de recevoir une grande délégation composée de COAFR et ACP en visite en RDC et   l’Ambassade le Suède en RDC avec à sa tête, SE Henric Rasbrant, Ambassadeur de la Suède en RDC accompagné de M. Joachim Beijmo, le Chef de Coopération, de Mme Charlotte Mukadi, Chargée Nationale de Programmes et Mme Cornelia Gårdmark, Head of Political, Economic, Promotion and Communication Section, Swedish Embassy in Kinshasa pour effectuer une visite de terrain des activités du projet Jeunesse Sobre-Communautés Plus Saines: Transformer les Jeunes Violents à Kinshasa financé par la Coopération Suédoise en RDC.  

Le Réprésentant Pays de WFAD, M. Dandy Yela et toute son équipe ont eu le privilège de conduire cette délégation aux sites retenus pour présenter les résultats sur la transformation de ces jeunes ex-kulunas et des impacts du projet sur les communautés. Le bureau de WFAD a saisi cette opportunité pour faire un plaidoyer sur l’importance de la continuité de l’appui financier à ce projet pour assurer la durabilité mais aussi en faire bénéficier d’autres jeunes vulnérables vivant dans les mêmes conditions de vie.

Le projet Jeunesse Sobre- Communautés Plus Saines est une initiative de la #WFAD et mis en oeuvre avec les partenaires locaux DASOD, SYFES et Interactions Ongd Rdc ayant comme objectif la transformation des jeunes appelés ‘kulunas’ à travers des séances d’accompagnement mental et psychosocial et un programme d’autonomisation avec des formations formelles et informelles ainsi que des AGR.

La visite a commencé au site de Makala où a été construit un  forage pour la production de l’eau potable dans le quartier Bagata afin de desservir plus de 20.000 habitants de ce coin de la capitale Kinshasa en eau saine. Par la suite, la délégation a visité le Centre Espoir sur Kabambare à Lingwala où WFAD et ses partenaires forment les jeunes filles et jeunes femmes, bénéficiaires du projet en coupe et couture.

Après deux années et demi de mise en œuvre, 1.036 jeunes filles et garçons, bénéficiaires ce projet triennal ont été accompagnés  psychosocialement et bénéficient présentement d’un programme d’autonomisation et de réinsertion à travers plusieurs formations comme la coupe et couture et la pâtisserie pour les jeunes filles; la coiffure, la sérigraphie, l’agriculture et la pisciculture pour les jeunes garçons et les jeunes hommes. A l’issue de ces formations, les bénéficiaires vont bénéficier de kits de sortie pour démarrer leurs propres activités pour l’auto-prise en charge. Toutefois, #WFAD et ses partenaires vont continuer l’encadrement de ces bénéficiaires pour assurer la durabilité de ces initiatives afin de leur éviter un retour en arrière.

Tous ces jeunes bénéficiaires sont aujourd’hui sevrés des drogues et autres substances psychoactives et sont enthousiasmés quant au nouveau départ leur offert par le projet Jeunesse Sobre.
