World Day for Prevention of Child Abuse 2024

On this World Day for the Prevention of Child Abuse, the World Federation Against Drugs (WFAD) calls on the global community to unite in the fight against all forms of abuse that affect children—especially those living in environments impacted by substance use disorders (SUD). Abuse in any form—whether physical, emotional, or neglect—can have devastating, lifelong consequences for children. Those exposed to substance abuse in their families are particularly vulnerable to these harms, often growing up in environments of instability, neglect, and trauma.

WFAD stands firmly behind the rights of all children, as outlined in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC), particularly the right to protection from all forms of violence and abuse, as stated in Article 19. Moreover, Article 33 of the UNCRC requires States Parties to protect children from the harmful effects of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances, which includes preventing their exploitation in drug trafficking. For children in families affected by SUD, the risk of exposure to neglect, abuse, and drug-related harm is significantly heightened. These children may experience emotional distress, abandonment, physical harm, and neglect, and are often overlooked due to the stigma surrounding substance use.

We must prioritize the mental and emotional health of children, as they often bear the brunt of their parents’ or caregivers’ struggles with addiction. This can manifest in both direct abuse and emotional neglect, severely affecting their development and well-being. Family-centered SUD treatment approaches are critical in addressing these challenges, as they focus on supporting both the parent and the child, ensuring that children are protected while their caregivers receive the necessary help for recovery. By strengthening family units, we not only break the cycle of addiction but also protect the children’s right to grow up in safe, nurturing environments.

It is our collective responsibility to ensure that these children are protected, supported, and provided with the opportunity to heal. It is essential that we take immediate and coordinated action to break the cycle of abuse, with a focus on comprehensive prevention strategies. These strategies must encompass education, early intervention, mental health support, addiction treatment programs, and safe spaces where children can seek help.

On this vital day, WFAD calls on governments, communities, and organizations to take decisive action in preventing child abuse, with a specific focus on families impacted by substance use disorders. We must invest in early intervention programs, strengthen support networks, and ensure that all children have access to the care and protection they deserve. By addressing the unique challenges faced by these children and supporting their families through integrated treatment and care, we can break the cycle of abuse and give every child the opportunity to grow up in a safe, nurturing environment.

Together, we have the power to create a future where no child is subjected to violence or neglect, and where families struggling with addiction receive the support they need to heal and thrive.
