Today, on the International Day of Families, we recognize the vital role families play in fostering sustainable development through care, connection, and community.
This year’s theme “Family-Oriented Policies for Sustainable Development“, reminds us that families are not only the foundation of society but also central actors in both early prevention and recovery support.
In prevention, families are essential at micro-level, strengthening protective factors, reducing risk factors for substance use and violence, for example, and building the foundation for resilience from an early age. At macro level, family-oriented policies are critical for enabling and sustaining these supportive environments at scale.
In recovery, families are a crucial part of the CHIME model, offering Connectedness, Hope, Identity, Meaning, and Empowerment. Which are key elements for sustainable and person-centred recovery. Their support can be a powerful source of stability and encouragement, helping individuals rebuild their lives with dignity and purpose.
Together we can work towards strengthening and supporting family-oriented approaches that lead to healthier individuals and resilient communities.
