The Reformed Drug and Substance Abuse Initiative – Women and Family Drug Abuse Programme – November 30th, 2021

The Reformed Drug and Substance Abuse Initiative organised the Women and Family Drug Abuse Programme on November 30th, 2021. The aim of the programme was to educate women and family members on the dangers of drug abuse and how to provide emotional support for their family members that abuse drugs. The programme was held at Bacod Initiative Hall, Jalingo-Taraba State, in partnership with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and Baseliea Community Development Initiative.

The main activities started around 10 AM prior to the registration of participants. The programme started with an opening ceremony which was provided by Mr Bello Bolyam, the National Coordinator of the Reformed Drug and Substance Abuse Initiative (REDSAI). The aim of the opening ceremony was to provide hints to the participants on why the programme was organised and why women should be at the centre of the fight against drug abuse among youth. Mr Bello Bolyam said that the Women and Family Drug Education Programme (WOFADEP) on the key roles family can help in preventing problematic drugs abuse is timeless. 

The programme attracted over 100 participants from different groups, organisations, and families. The topics covered include understanding drug use dynamics, identifying early signs of drug use, responses to drug use in the family, and aiding coping

The last session involved a panellist session. This session was meant to raise discussions around drug abuse and the roles of NGOs and CBOs in fighting against drug abuse in the family, society, and community at large. The discussant for the session were Mrs Una Ahmed Ben (Principal Staff Officer) of NDELA Drug Demand Reduction Unit, Haj. Batulu Mohammed (Rep Miyetti Allah TS), Barrister Ifeoma Oyayindo (Chairperson International Federation of Women Lawyers, Taraba State Chapter), Barrister Mrs Dorcas Andekuba Haggai (Welfare Secretary FIDA), and Pastor Bello Bolyam (National Coordinator of REDSAI).  The areas discussed were opportunities that exist in their organisation to support the fight against drug abuse, provisions available in the law to help and protect drug users, and the roles of CBOs and NGOs in curbing drug abuse. During the discussion director of REDSAI solicit support for the NGO in order to reach more people and to provide necessary care for the clients through a partnership with other NGOs, CBOs, Community, Schools, and Governments

Lastly, the workshop ended with a free Hepatitis test which was carried out by one of the partners of the seminar, over 100 participants were tested and the results were provided after a few days.
